Food For Thought Matt Tod
Welcome to the Quarter Life
Matt is the Executive Director of Youth Programs - an exciting new initiative created to meet the growing call to bring emotional intelligence training and learning to youth ages 14-25.
We call it the "quarter life crisis." It's that time in our young adult lives when we've just left the safety of our post-secondary educations and have entered into the often unfamiliar, sometimes creepy, uncertainty of the "real world." We don't yet have the life-experience that our parents have to help get through it, and we can't just go out and buy a Ford Mustang or the complete 9th season of Smallville. Well...
Recently, IHHP hosted a webinar entitled Why Survival is not Enough:are you surviving or are you growing in turbulent times? Really good stuff; lots of great information for how to manage panic in the workplace by focusing on yourself and managing your own emotions.
Both JP and Bill made some points that really stuck with me. I thought I'd share four lessons I learned. Read More

Welcome to the Quarter Life con't
Panic is a virus:emotions are infectious. Anytime we're scared, panicked or triggered in a negative way, those emotions influence our behaviour, and spread to the people around us. Think about the last time you got worked up about something or someone at work. You triggered your brain into a fight or flight mentality. Typically, we either run away from the problem or get confrontational with the person bringing out that emotion.
Remind yourself, this too shall pass: in other words, get over it but learn from it. After I lost my first job, I had no idea where I wanted to go next - back to school ... another job in the same field? I had to allow myself the time to feel frustrated, upset, and worthless. But people (many of them older than me) just kept saying the same thing - everything is going to be all right. Wisdom that comes from experience, I guess.
We have three big learning opportunities: feedback, setbacks, and mistakes. All three of these are incredibly important - especially feedback. If the person is doing it right, they're giving you this feedback to make you better at what you do. I attended the two day EI for Personal Leadership course last week, and I think I'm starting to get the hang of this feedback thing.
My mistakes don't define me: it's ok to make mistakes as long as we learn from them. Making mistakes is the easy part. It's the learning from those mistakes that takes a bit more practice.
Now there's some emotional intelligence for you.

The End For Now
IHHP is looking toward future programming that provides Leadership Training to youth ages 14-25. We have included a Youth Survey link in the Quick Links box. Feel free to forward it to anyone you know in this age range. The data gathered will be used to determine the direction this new program will take.
We know that many leaders are experiencing challenging times yet, like us, continue to be excited about the future. We are genuinely pleased to have you along on this journey of learning. As Winston Churchill said, "Continuous effort - not strength or intelligence - is the key to unlocking our potential."
