The Five Rocks

Bill's Side of the Bridge

Anxiety. That's what really resonated with me when JP and our research team were telling me about the results of our seven year study.  Not the anxiety that it took us seven years to complete the study, but the idea that people who perform at higher levels in business are able to approach the anxiety that comes from doing things that are difficult.

That is, it's not the task, the project, the presentation, or the person that's the problem; it's the anxiety that manifests inside me when I think about doing one of these difficult things.  If I can learn the brain science and the five key attributes identified in the study that will help

me manage that anxiety, then I can step into things the way I know I need to. And if I don't manage that a
nxiety, then I am either not going to step into something (i.e. avoid it), or it's not going to go well because of the anxiety. continue...

A Resource for Change: Youth By Matt Tod- Director of IHHP's Youth Arm

 3 cities
Over the past three and a half years, a big message I've shared has been how we, as young people, can use our youth to make a difference. It might mean stopping to talk to that kid  who walks down the hall clutching his binder and praying that no one notices him, or taking the time to really get to know that girl who seems to have everything together, yet she goes home every day and cries because she doesn't think she's skinny or pretty enough.

Young people all across North America (and the world) have an incredible resource available to them: their Youth!

It's my hope that as I continue to share these incredible stories of young people who are changing themselves, their communities and the world, you will feel as motivated and inspired as I do.  I want to encourage you to think about the power young people have to change their lives and the lives of others. After all, when we change one person's life, we change the world!

We correlated data from over six thousand people in our EI360 database in order to determine the two attributes that most highly relate to promotion. They are:

 1. The ability to admit weakness, and

 2. The ability to listen without jumping to conclusions.

Here at IHHP, we have just concluded a seven year study in to the traits of leaders who consistently perform at their best, even under the most demanding circumstances. Our research indicates that leaders who approach difficult tasks, relationships and change - outperform leaders who avoid them by 20%.

Low performance culture and employee engagement levels are terms we hear all too often in today's economy. And typically, it is the person in charge who is having the most profound negative impact on the business. What can be done about it? Join us on the upcoming complimentary webinar to learn more.

THE POWER
OF APPROACH
Doing What's Difficult to Drive Performance & Leadership

Presented on April 29th at 1:00 PM EDT, Q&A to follow

What if there were five powerful traits that could help you and your team approach - not avoid - difficult tasks, relationships and change?

Five traits that you may not know about BUT that you can change?

Our research indicates that the performance of leaders who approach difficult tasks, relationships and change exceeds the performance of leaders who avoid them by 20%, before factoring in any of the indirect benefits.

Would your organization benefit from:

Leaders who approach demanding tasks: who get more done in less time;

Leaders who approach difficult conversations: who create 'residue-free' relationships because issues are dealt with head-on;

Leaders who approach unrelenting change: who are able to create change in themselves and others - and get people onside, even when it is difficult - because they understand how 'all change is personal;'

Leaders who inspire other people to want to give extra effort because of the behavior they model;

Leaders who end up happier and more connected to others, creating a spillover effect on the people around them.

This Webinar will outline the latest research on change in organizations and give you insight into understanding the personal nature of change.

JP's Corner: The Power of Approach

Dr. JP Pawliw-Fry
Dr. JP Pawliw-Fry, Professional Speaker
Twelve years ago when Elizabeth and I started IHHP we essentially knew nothing about business. We had both spent long years studying and then working in more academic and clinical environments and business for us was something my brother did or my good friend from high school, Bill Benjamin, did. It was all kind of interesting but also quite opaque to Elizabeth and me. If business was something I didn't understand in 1998 when we started the business, it was downright scary in 1999.

By then we began to understand a small but somewhat important precept of business: a company needs revenue to survive. Any good ideas or research we had about behavior or performance simply didn't mean a thing if we couldn't pay our staff or our mortgage.

While I came to understand the need for revenue for our business, this 'deep insight' didn't necessarily mean I could drive revenue. That required picking up the phone. And I was afraid of the phone. Continue...

JPJP's Corner, continued

Well, not exactly the phone, but who was on the other side of the phone: a prospective client. But it wasn't really the person on the other side of the phone; it was the anxiety inside of me when I attempted to speak and sell to the person on the other side of the phone.

What I didn't realize then that, after seven years of study on our newest research project I am beginning to understand, is that we instinctively move away from anxiety, thinking it will serve our best interests. This moving away or avoiding anxiety is at the heart of our new white paper, The Power of Approach and is a fascinating look into what makes us happy and effective.

What has become clear in our study of individuals, as you will read in the white paper, is that effective and happy people move toward - or approach - anxiety as opposed to move away from, or avoid it.

This can be for the very small to the very large. For me, it was the anxiety of being rejected as I made cold calls. For you it might be something completely different but it will include anxiety; for instance, having a difficult conversation with a not so easy person. We can see it in others when it comes to responding to change in our organizations. They avoid or resist as best they can, allowing the anxiety of uncertainty to paralyze them.

Our new white paper will focus on IHHP's study of leaders who achieved high performance and high happiness. It will shed light on what traits allowed these leaders to move toward rather than move away.  It will show how the power of approach is essential for having a positive impact on people and business.

And maybe, just maybe, the white paper will explain why IHHP didn't go bankrupt all those years ago!  It might also have something to do with that friend of mine from high school, Bill Benjamin, who knew something about business (and, more importantly, The Power of Approach). He became our CEO eight years ago!

BillBill's Side of the Bridge, con't

This is why I'm excited about our new research and our new "Power of Approach" program - because I know that learning to recognize and manage this anxiety is critical to my continued success in business.    And the research backs that up - these individuals we studied outperformed everyone else by an average of 20%!

Now if a 20% performance increase isn't enough, it was also great to learn that these high performers were able to manage that anxiety to the point where it actually had a positive impact on their personal life and their well-being.   At the end of the day who doesn't want to be happier and healthier? I mean, what's the point of performing 20% higher if you can't enjoy it.

The good news is that we can learn how our brain works in order to manage the anxiety we all face during challenging and difficult situations, so we can perform at our best - and end up happier doing it.

Now that's a Webinar and training program I don't want to miss!
